Academic Credit
Course Numbers
Each course has an eight-digit identification number. The first two numbers identify the school or faculty within the university which offers the course. The next three numbers are the subject code, and the last three numbers refer to the course level. Course numbers 001 through 299 are lower level undergraduate courses and 300 through 499 are upper level undergraduate courses; course numbers 500 through 800 are graduate courses.
For example, General Psychology is represented:
01 : 830 : 101
school subject course
Credit Value of Courses
Credits awarded for the successful completion of each course are indicated in parentheses following the course title. The notation "(CR. BY ARR.)" indicates that the number of credits is determined by arrangement with the department offering the course.
Non-credit Courses
The symbols E and N preceding course credit indicate that no credit is earned toward the Rutgers degree and no grade is computed in the grade-point average.
- Official Audit
A student may audit a course by entering an N in the "credit hour prefix" column of the registration form. The student is expected to do all the work of the course except the final exam and is graded S or U. The course and grade appear on the student's transcript. Students opting for audit registration are required to pay the regular tuition and student fee.
This option may not be changed after the course has begun.
- Preparatory Courses (E)
E-credits are credits which count towards full-time student status, but do not count toward graduation. E-credit courses are available for students who have not placed into courses at the level carrying graduation credit.
Transfer of Credit to Another Institution
Each institution of higher education makes its own determination about the amount or kind of credit it will grant for courses completed at another university. We recommend that visiting students secure prior written approval from an academic advisor at their home institutions before registering for a course at Rutgers.
