Things to Consider Prior to Registration

Rutgers University credits are regularly transferred to many other colleges; however, most colleges require prior approval of transfer credits. Therefore, you should check the transferability of each course with the appropriate official from your college before you register.

Please do not send approval forms to Rutgers. Rutgers cannot guarantee the amount or kind of credit which will be granted by another institution for any course taken at Rutgers. Students are responsible for requesting a transcript to be sent to their home institution or future home institution.

Visiting students are responsible for determining that they have completed all required prerequisites and confirming the transferability of Rutgers University credits with their home institution prior to registration.

Visiting students are eligible to register one course, up to 3 credits, during Winter Session.

If you have questions about the content of a particular course or need a copy of a course syllabus to ensure the credits are transferable, please contact the appropriate academic department for more information.

Winter Visiting Student FAQs

All faculty, staff, students, and guests are assigned a Rutgers unique identifier known as a NetID, comprised of initials and a unique number (e.g. jqs23). In order to access many of the electronic services available to you at Rutgers, you need to activate your Rutgers NetID at netid.rutgers.edu using your assigned RUID that you will receive after filling out the Visiting Student Registration Form.

Your assigned NetID will appear on the activation screen. The NetID will enable you to open an email and computer account, view course materials and your grades online, and access other services. We encourage you to create a Rutgers email address so your email address appears on an enrollment roster and in the online directory.

An SPN (Special Permission Number) is a 6 digit code that allow students to register for a closed or restricted section. When entered into the online registration system, the SPN helps you gain access to closed courses. Please know that applying for an SPN does not mean that you are guaranteed to receive one.

SPNs are assigned based on seniority, amount of cumulative credits, and availability. Please contact the offering department to see if an SPN is available for the course.

If the course you want to register for is closed, keep checking the University Schedule of Classes for openings. Due to large demand for our courses and limited number of open seats, some courses are unable to issue SPNs for closed courses. Please do not request an SPN for a specific section when other sections of the course are still open.

You can check your unofficial transcript from your MyRutgers dashboard. You may request your official Rutgers transcript here.

High school students are not eligible to register for Winter Session.
